An Iowa State Patrol trooper was seriously injured in a crash and two people were arrested early Wednesday in a pursuit that began in Bellevue and ended in southwest Iowa.
Bellevue police said they received reports about a possible drive-by shooting Tuesday night just south of Bellevue in the Paradise Lakes area off Harlan Lewis Road.
Officers returned to the area early Wednesday, checking for anyone linked to the gunshots report.
Around 4 a.m., a man in a vehicle fired gunshots in the direction of the officers, police said. The man then fled in his vehicle into Iowa.
Later, the man fired gunshots at Fremont County Sheriff’s Office deputies, police said. The pursuit, now involving the deputies and an Iowa State Patrol trooper, moved into Hamburg in extreme southwest Iowa.
Police said the trooper crashed his cruiser around 4:45 a.m. near Hamburg. He was taken by medical helicopter to a hospital. Police said they don’t think the trooper’s injuries were life-threatening.
The man sought in the pursuit crashed his vehicle in a separate accident into the Nishnabotna River near the Iowa-Missouri border, police said. The man and a woman were arrested.
