PONCA – Ponca State Park naturalists will be back to work over the next couple days with more great activities for the entire family.
Starting Friday morning, there’ll be an introduction to archery course with all equipment provided. Archery participants must be five years old or older and cost is $1 per six arrows. Other introduction courses are scheduled for Saturday, August 3 with another archery session from 9 – 11 a.m. and a tomahawk course on Sunday, August 4. To attend the tomahawk course, kids must be eight years old or older as cost is also $1 per six arrows. Also, Saturday afternoon will feature an introductory course to slingshots from 2 until 3:30 p.m. Cost is $1 per 30 rocks and the minimum age limit is five.
Friday afternoon will be made for a riverfront bird tour at 1 p.m. Ponca State Park has some of the best birdwatching in the state. From the beautiful call of the Red-Winged Blackbird to the graceful soaring of the bald eagle, the riverfront trail has it all.
Join a park naturalist as they teach you how and where to look for birds. Binoculars will be provided and the park asks for pre-registration with a limit to 10 people in their bird tour van (additional guests may follow in their own vehicles).
Closing out Friday will be a “Star Bound Explorers” event at 3 p.m. There is a limit of 25 crafts for a cost of $1 each as park-goers will be able to bring their own little constellation home.
Moving into a busy Saturday, Critter Corner will following the morning archery course at 11:30 a.m. This is a very popular program that is made for all ages. This program provides a snapshot of wildlife found along the Missouri river. Meet at the Resource and Education Center for this free event.
Backwater kayaking will then conclude the day at 2 p.m. and again at 3:30 p.m. Attendees will learn the basic skills of kayaking in an “off-river” backwater area. The event is offered to those 12 years of age and up as cost is $15 per person and limited to 12 people each session.
