Husker Hometown Tailgate

WAYNE — On Saturday, September 22 the Wayne City Auditorium will host a Husker Hometown Tailgate to benefit the Nebraska Children’s Home Society. Kickoff for the Nebraska vs. Michigan game is slated for 11 a.m. The Auditorium will open at 10 a.m.

Mike Hassler and his wife Tara are advocates for the Nebraska Children’s Home Society and are a big part in putting on this event. The Nebraska Children’s Home Society helped Mike and Tara adopt their daughter Laura.

“We were fortunate enough to adopt our daughter Laura through them about two and half years ago.” said Mike. “Fortunately, on leap day, February 29 of 2016, we got the phone call and three days later we had a daughter.”

The Nebraska Children’s Home Society never asked for money from the Hasslers. Instead they asked them to become advocates and donate their time and talents. Mike has created Nebraska Cornhusker artwork to auction off at Nebraska Children’s Home Society events and Tara initiated a diaper/ baby supply drive two years ago that brought in over $1,000 in supplies to help out single mothers in need.

This year marks the 125th Anniversary of years in service for the Nebraska Children’s Home Society. They help with much more than adoptions services.

“It’s a wonderful organization. They just don’t only do adoption, they do foster care, and they educate young mothers and they are just a really awesome organization,” said Mike.

This Saturday offers opportunity to go watch some Husker football and support a good cause. Tickets can be purchased at the door, $15 dollars for children 5-10 years old an $30 for adults. The Husker Hometown Tailgate offers more than just the game on TV.

“It’s a fundraising event and just a fun day to come watch some Husker football. We are going to have a silent and live auction, raffle baskets, meat package raffles, and things like that,” said Mike. “(The) 4th Jug is going to cater it and The Max is going to bartend it. We’ll have the game on three big screen TV’s so should be a real fun day just to help promote the Nebraska Children’s Home Society.”

The community has helped play a part in this fundraising event as well.

“We have had a lot of Wayne businesses that have generously donated items and money and we have just gotten a lot of great support from the city so far and we hope we get a good turnout, hopefully you know, nothing beats a good meal and Husker football,” concluded Mike.
