Highway 81 Reopened; Travel Still Not Advised

NORFOLK – Blizzard conditions are making for treacherous driving in northeast Nebraska.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation is reporting that Highway 35 between Norfolk and Wayne and Highway 81 from Norfolk to the intersection with Highway 20 are impassable. Highway 81 has since been reopened to traffic Highway 20 to the South Dakota border, but the State Patrol says travel is still highly discouraged.

“I would recommend not driving, especially north,” said Lt. Jim Stover. “It’s deceptive, especially in town where it’s more sheltered as opposed to the outskirts of town, or even in the country where there are shelter belts it’s deceptive.”

The State Patrol has been working with a jack-knifed semi along Highway 81, and there were reports of multiple cars in ditches along Highway 35, but for the most part officials say the roads have not been that busy.

“As far as a lot of traffic, thankfully there is not,” said Lt. Stover. “People have heard and adhered to recommendations.”

The blizzard warnings and winter weather advisories are still set to expire at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
