Haven House Promoting Domestic Violence Awareness Month Activities, Hosting Chamber Coffee Friday

WAYNE – Over the course of October, Domestic Violence Awareness is being put on full display to ‘Break the Silence, End the Violence’ as Haven House in Wayne has plenty of upcoming activities.

Outreach Coordinator with Haven House, Maureen Carrigg joined the ‘View from Wayne America’ earlier this week.

Carrigg also serves as an advocate and works with clients as volunteers are always welcome as she listed ways to assist by being an advocate.

“They can through advocacy training,” Carrigg added. “They would just contact us or there’s an application on our website online or you can connect with us with our Facebook or Instagram account.”

Haven House provides services for crisis intervention with domestic violence and sexual assault while also serving as a resource for shelter.

Haven House is funded through federal government grants, private donations from different corporations in the area, local grants, supply drives and more.

“Some people donate their time, some people donate goods and then some people if they’d like to donate cash you can do so securely online on our website,” Carrigg added. “Or a lot of people actually mail us checks and we’re very grateful for those donations.”

Carrigg would also like to thank all the churches in the area.

Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. four individuals work in the Wayne office along four in the South Sioux City location while the Hartington office is in the process of opening and will have someone present each Wednesday or by appointment.

Carrigg mentioned they run two shelters in the Wayne and Dakota county areas along with responding to the 24-hour crisis line, provide protection order assistance and criminal justice advocacy assistance.

“We also do things with logistics for families because many of our clients are families,” Carrigg mentioned. “We have a food pantry in all of our offices that we give out food. We also have a peer support group that meets in Wayne on Tuesday’s (4 – 4:45 p.m.), and we provide community education programs and also prevention programs about domestic violence and sexual assault.”

Last year, Haven House issued the equivalent of 7,000 meals from their food pantries.
