Future Unclear for Norfolk Herberger’s

NORFOLK – The future is unclear for the Herberger’s location in Norfolk after liquidators were reportedly the only bidders for the bankrupt company Bon-Ton Stores Inc.

Reports say the department store chain, which owns 200 regional department stores including Herberger’s, Younkers, and four other regional chains, will go out of business. Liquidators were the only bidders after a court-supervised auction on Monday, meaning the buyer could possibly sell off all assets.

Herberger’s management in Norfolk had no comments when NCN called to ask about the future of the location. The department store is currently one of three anchor stores at the Sunset Plaza Mall alongside JC Penney and Target. It takes up more than 1/4 of the mall’s space, which is 77,365 square feet according to the mall’s website.

Bon-Ton Stores Inc. joins a national trend. Toy’s ‘R’ Us also filed for bankruptcy later last year.
