Fifth COVID-19 case in Nebraska centers around Crofton student

CROFTON – We now have more information on the fifth presumptive case of Coronavirus in Nebraska, and it ties into last week’s Girls State Basketball tournament.

In a letter sent home to parents Tuesday, Crofton Public School officials announced that a student at their high school has been transferred to UNMC to be treated for COVID-19.

Officials with the Department of Health and Human Services announced Tuesday that the student is being treated at UNMC’s Biocontainment Center.

Crofton school officials say the student began showing symptoms last Thursday. They add that anyone who sat in the general fan sections of last week’s state girls basketball championship games featuring Hartington Cedar Catholic versus Weeping Water and Crofton versus BRLD on Thursday, March 5 may have been exposed. In addition, any Crofton fourth through sixth-graders and staff that attended school on Tuesday may have been exposed.

Crofton is canceling school for the rest of this week and officials with the North Central Health Department will be gathering more information beginning Wednesday on individuals that may have been exposed.
