Courthouse Restoration Project Cost Estimates Presented, Commissioners Recess Until Thursday Morning

WAYNE – With a work session already on the agenda for the regularly scheduled Wayne County Board of Commissioners meeting Tuesday, another session was pushed to Thursday.

The Commissioners met in the Courthouse meeting room and towards the end of the meeting, Jerry Berggren and Doug Elting with Berggren Architects presented the base package for the exterior work for the courthouse restoration and three options for a new roof.

The updated total is $1,107,761.00 while the three options for the roof vary from asphalt, a synthetic slate or a natural slate shingle.

Costs for the roof options, which include the exterior total, for asphalt (25-35 years) is $1,695,675.00; for a new synthetic slate (50-65 years) is $1,778,499.00 and a new natural slate shingle (100 years) is $2,086,675.00. In addition, Berggren Architects would recommend the board consider adding a contingency allowance of approximately 15% to the total of the option selected.

Extension Educator, Amy Topp then talked about purchasing a laptop. Cost would be $2,788 as UNL will pitch in $398 for the computer. Topp stated each year they like to update their computers and it has been budgeted for.

County Attorney, Mike Pieper then addressed the board about a National organization suing pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors for opioid claims. Pieper just wanted to make sure the board knew and is not sure what costs would come from the county but will look more into it and report back to the board.

A work session was also held talking about fiber optic lines, fees and per tower costs for a Road Haul Agreement. Commissioners, Mark Casey (Highway Superintendent) and Pieper all made corrections to send their fourth version to Sholes Wind, LLC.

A $1,500 per tower fee was set along with fiber optic cable to be buried 8’ down the roadway (all previous lines buries will be grandfathered-in) and a not to exceed $20,000 for engineering bills for inspections.

The Wayne County Board of Commissioners called for a recess and will pick their meeting back up on Thursday, March 22 at 10 a.m. from the Courthouse. Discussion will be about whether to proceed with the estimated costs for the courthouse renovation project and choose which type of shingles
