Council To Approve Appointments, Continue Discussion Of Ameritas Life Insurance Corporation Location

WAYNE – Several appointments will be made during this week’s regularly scheduled Wayne City Council meeting.

From the council chambers inside City Hall, the Tuesday, December 6 meeting will start at 5:30 p.m.

A Dedication of Service plaque will be presented to outgoing councilmember Chris Woehler.

The swearing in of the newly elected mayor (Cale Giese) along with councilmembers will follow with the selection of council president as well.

Council will take action on a 2023 renewal through the Nebraska Department of Transportation’s maintenance. This annual agreement pertains to surface maintenance of the state highways through city limits. The state maintains the driving lanes at their cost and this agreement is for the City of Wayne to pay for the center turn lane through town. Typical maintenance work under this agreement is crack sealing, pothole repair, joint grinding and concrete replacement. The City of Wayne is also responsible for the snow removal on the entire highway within the City limits.

An action item will highlight the appointment of Joel Hansen as the City Street Superintendent for the calendar year 2023 followed by the signing of the Year-End Certification of City Streets Superintendent Form for 2022.

Several other appointments will follow for City Clerk (Betty McGuire), Finance Director (Beth Porter); Street and Planning Director (Joel Hansen); Police Chief (Marlen Chinn); Park and Recreation Director (Lowell Heggemeyer); Senior Citizens Coordinator (Diane Bertrand); Library Director (Heather Headley); Electric Production Superintendent (Jeff Triggs); Electric Distribution Superintendent (Tim Sutton) and Water/Wastewater Superintendent (Casey Junck).

Appointments will also be made to the Problem Resolution Team (two), Civil Service Commission (two), LB840 Revolving Loan Fund Committee (three) and LB840 Sales Tax Advisory Committee (seven).

A resolution item will also highlight the appointment of Amy K. Miller as City Attorney and approving the 2023 Retainer Agreement. Miller was first appointed City Attorney in 2015 for $5,416 per month and her compensation has not changed since that time.

A trio of discussion items will start with an update from Wayne Community Schools on the future of the Community Activity Center land.

Discussion along with an update on the proposed acquisition from first Methodist Church of Wayne is also on the agenda. This is for a piece of property just north of the Ameritas building.

A discussion and possible action authorizing city staff to negotiate the purchase of property from Ameritas Life Insurance Corporation will highlight the parcels of the Ameritas Building at 513 Main Street and Ameritas parking lot at 517 Logan Street.
