LINCOLN – As the deadline approaches for the 2018 Cornhusker State Games, a final registration date has been set for Friday, July 6.
The Nebraska Sports Council has allowed participants all spring and summer long time to sign-up for the 2018 State Games. Through June, over 6,000 athletes have registered for the Games with Opening Ceremonies set for Friday, July 20. Most of the events will last from July 20 – Sunday, July 29.
Competition is offered in more than 60 sports at venues in Lincoln, Omaha and surrounding communities. Athletes from 169 Nebraska communities and 21 different states have enrolled.
Top sports, so far, include volleyball—550, shooting sports—451, ice hockey—423, basketball—403 and track & field—401. Athletes range in age from two (Dillon Booth, Papillion) to 90 (Bernie Moran, Columbus) years old.
Besides the competition, each registered athlete receives a shirt, Opening Ceremonies pass and SportFest athlete meal. Again, Opening Ceremonies take place July 20 at 8 p.m. from Seacrest Field in Lincoln and feature the parade of athletes, skydivers, fireworks, mascots and caldron-lighting by a mystery celebrity-athlete.
The Cornhusker State Games is a program of the Nebraska Sports Council, which also conducts the Mud Run, Pumpkin Run, NE150 Challenge and the Nebraska Corporate Games.
