Community Of Wayne Comes Through Again During Electronics Recycling Event

WAYNE – As the weather cleared Saturday morning in came the Wayne Green Team and volunteers hosting their annual electronics recycling event.

Two eastbound lanes were placed on third street between Lincoln and Pearl streets (next to City Hall parking lot) where community members and area residents brought in their old tv’s, laptops and more.

Sandy Brown with the Wayne Green Team said they’ve made a huge impact on diverting electronics from going into the landfills.

“The community has come to rely on us and they know that every year we have it,” said Brown. “They’re just waiting with their electronics to bring it in to our fall event and we’re glad for that.”

The morning began with a line prior to the event beginning at 8 a.m. and the two trucks filling up quickly.

“So, we started taking electronics early,” Brown added. “But people have been great bringing in big TVs like the kind you never could believe even existed and lots of computer equipment as well.”

Volunteer work came from the Wayne State College women’s soccer and men’s basketball teams along with Wayne Green Team members. Thanks to funding from the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy electronic recycling services were also provided by First Choice Recycling from Sioux City, IA.

A complete list of items and amount recycled will be released once all the numbers are in. In the previous six years of hosting the event, the community of Wayne has recycled over 100,000 pounds of electronics.

“We have just been so grateful to have a community that cares about sustainability, that cares about reducing waste and really making things last,” Brown mentioned. “So, thank you to our community for making it matter.”

The community of Wayne has also been selected to host another Household Hazardous Waste Event by the Northeast Nebraska RC&D. The event will be held on Saturday, October 12 from 8 – 10 a.m. at the Wayne Transfer Station.
