WAYNE – Those who made their way into the doors of the Wayne Herald Friday morning had their photo taken and received a copy of a paper that was taken home during the Chamber Coffee.
The Wayne Herald has been at their current location of 114 Main Street since the summer of 1966.
Kevin Peterson is in his 15th straight year as the publisher of the Wayne Herald and also brings in over 30 years in the paper industry. Employees at the Herald did some research and it was 28 years ago the last time they hosted a Chamber Coffee. Peterson said they printed that publication and got a kick out of what the staff looked like at that time
“We need to do this,” said Peterson. “We like to show people that we are up with the times as well digitally and how we take pictures and how we print. Anybody is welcome to come through the operation, we can show you how we do things; how we get our news. I figure once every 28 years is probably okay.”
Peterson is also the vice president of the Nebraska Press Association and will become president in April.
Staff members were introduced as a short bio of everyone who works at the Herald was put in a section called ‘You’re In The News’ as they ran the press Friday morning for all who attended.
Along with seeing updates in the computer software, the press has also enhanced.
“Today, again it’s all digital, people send their pages in, we send it with a computer through to our press room,” said Peterson. “They print out the plates and they put it right on the press. So, it’s a lot cleaner, a lot less labor intensive.”
The Herald has a four-unit press and Peterson added the press room stays pretty busy with printing multiple papers.
“We print all of our stuff here,” Peterson added. “We also print area papers. I print Wakefield, we print Pender, we print the Dakota County Star. Now we have started picking up Clarkson, Leigh, Dodge and Howells.”
The Wayne Herald also prints the grocery store tabs for Pac N Save, Quality Foods and Cubby’s (Pender) along with the ‘Rocket’ every two weeks.
