Commissioners Approve Health Insurance, Evaluation Protest Hearings Accepted

WAYNE – Before there were a pair of recesses in the Wayne County Board of Equalization during protest hearings, the Board of Commissioners met earlier Tuesday morning to hear more about an insurance update.

From the Courthouse meeting room, the Commissioners had Steve Muir with Elkhorn Valley Insurance back for an appointment. Discussion about United HealthCare insurance renewal was taken.

From the first meeting in July, board members were told their insurance was going up and Commissioners appreciated Steve coming in to let them know. Within the past two weeks, Steve and County Clerk, Deb Finn worked on several 2018-19 Health Insurance proposals for the Commissioners.

After a few minutes of breaking down the proposals, the Commissioners chose plan HSA6550/4000 where employees will cover costs up front and be reimbursed by the county right after. The policy would go into effect on September 1.

The Wayne County Board of Commissioners appreciated the work of both Deb and Steve.

Moving into the afternoon, the Board of Equalization heard a handful of protest hearings between 11 a.m. and Noon before finishing them off after 1 p.m. In total, there were 12 protest hearings heard by County Assessor, Dawn Duffy and the Board of Equalization.

Throughout the Board of Equalization meeting, it was discussed what can be done to shorten the time from protest hearing to hearing. The board will talk about changes that could be made for next time.

Those who attended will get a letter in the mail within seven days stating what their evaluation would be. If property owners would like to protest Wayne County they’ll have to go to the Tax Equalization Review Commission Board (TERC). The filing fee for each appeal is $25 and can be sent to the Commission’s office in Lincoln.

The next regularly scheduled Wayne County Board of Commissioners meeting will be on Tuesday, August 7 at 9 a.m.
