City of Wayne Walking Trail Hosts Ribbon Cutting During Chamber Coffee, ChamberPercs Friday

WAYNE – A northeast Nebraska walking trail was official recognized with a ribbon cutting ceremony on May 7 during Friday morning Chamber Coffee.

From the underpass of the Wayne Walking Trail, community members joined City of Wayne officials during Friday morning Chamber Coffee. ChamberPercs was also offered on the Wayne, NE Facebook page.

Wes Blecke has been the City Administrator since 2017 and welcomed all who attended before thanking a list of individuals who put in the work to begin and finish the Wayne Walking Trail.

TR Harris was the contractor of the trail with Robert Woehler & Son’s being a subcontractor on the recent project.

Lowell Heggemeyer, Parks & Rec Director went over the history of the trail.

Phase one of the trail was first discussed in 2001 and after funding and the design was completed construction then begin in 2003. Cost for the first phase was $498,000 with the City of Wayne’s cost being 20%. Discussion of the second phase then started in 2007 and costed $2.6 million with the share also being 20% from the City of Wayne.

Five benches donated from the Wayne Rotary Club along with one memorial bench will be installed along the trail.

Jodi Gibson with Nebraska Department of Transportation also spoke during Friday morning Chamber Coffee.

Several original committee members were in attendance Friday morning that first started the trail talk.

Phase I is known as the Will Wiseman trail, 2.75 miles long, was constructed in 2003 and the second phase being the Leila Maynard trail, being three miles long was completed in the fall of 2020. This will provide approximately six miles of trail in the City of Wayne.
