CHS Celebrates One Year in Building, AD Hiebner Receives Surprise Honor

COLUMBUS – Columbus High Students and staff celebrated a year of being in the new building, and capped it off by surprising Activities Director Dave Hiebner.

Columbus High Principal Steven Woodside says part of the design of the building was to have a time capsule by the media center. Over the past year Woodside has been receiving various CHS memorabilia that will be going into the time capsule, along with landmarks that celebrate CHS activities and student accomplishments over the past year.

“You know I had some really good folks bring some stuff to contribute, and your talking back to the 100 year celebration, your talking about the bond issue for the former high school, and just the history of Columbus I think that’s really special, because there is that maroon pride that transcends all years,” says Woodside.

Woodside says the students have made the transition as good as anyone who’s been involved, with student attendance on the rise over the past year.

“They have made this place a really wonderful place to be, and it’s been a really exciting year, and I’m looking forward to a little bit, slowing some stuff down, so that we have stuff in place, and you know enjoying it, and building upon what we have,” says Woodside.

The celebration didn’t end with a time capsule presentation though. Assistant Principal Jason Schapmann presented Activities Director Dave Hiebner with a Discoverer Way plaque, for embodying the Discoverer Way spirit, as he took over the AD role during the transition between buildings.

“Dave just embraced it. He’s everywhere. When ever you need him, he’s there. He’s tireless. I don’t think he’s ever had a bad day, he’s such a positive guy,” said Woodside. “And really our activities program and just our school culture is so much better because of him, that today had to be a little bit about him too.”

Hiebner took over the job midway through the 2015-’16 school year, for Mark Brown, who stepped down due to health reasons, and infamously loaded and drove a Uhaul moving truck from the old high school to the new high school, to make it easier for staff to transition.

“First off when I put the program together, then I saw somebody jumping in, and something I didn’t realize what was going… but it’s absolutely great. It’s an honor the school means a lot to me, and everything that goes on here, it’s for the kids, and I’m really proud to be a part of it,” says Hiebner.

Hiebner said having Brown’s help was crucial in making the transition to the AD position.

“Without Mark’s help it would not have been possible, and the things he did to make the position what it is, made it a simpler transition, and I know that he’s a phone call away, if I need someone to bounce an idea off of,” says Hiebner.

There is no current date set for when the time capsule will be opened up.
