WAYNE – Northeast Nebraska residents are invited to get into the holiday spirit as Christmas on Main returns to downtown Wayne America this week.
Traditionally on the Thursday before Thanksgiving, the evening will feature Parade of Lights, photo opportunities with Santa, a ‘Kids Korner’, Jolly Trolley rides along with events taking place through the day all across town.
Starting the evening of Thursday, November 22 a tree lighting ceremony will be held where carolers will gather at 6:15 p.m. to lead carols and at 6:30 p.m., the decorated tree at 7th & Main will be turned on signaling the start of the parade.
Assistant director at Wayne Area Economic Development, Irene Mock said the chamber office has worked with the city crews making a set up where the tree has an actual switch.
“We have invited this year’s Citizen of the Year Family to turn on the lights,” said Mock. “So, the Scott Hasemann family will be available at 6:30 p.m. They’ll flip the switch that will light the big tree at 7th & Main.”
The parade route will start at 6th & Main going south towards first street with the line up being held on West sixth street between Pearl and Lincoln streets (Wayne County Courthouse).
Pre-registration (form can be found at wayneworks.org under the Newsletter) is recommended as the parade will be announced and judged. Line up will be based on order of arrival as volunteers will check in the entries. Those who don’t pre-register should prepare a script for the announcer to read.
The 2019 Parade of Lights entry form is due back to the office by the end of day Wednesday. Businesses who are also wishing to participate in the window decorating contest need to contact the WAED office to sign up also by Wednesday as windows will be judged Thursday.
Following the parade, Santa will visit with children at 210 Main Street and parents are welcome to take photos. Goodie bags will be provided by Ameritas as this event is free for families.
Other events taking place Thursday will be the ‘Kids Korner’ at 210 Main Street and Jolly Trolley Rides (weather permitting) located at Hwy 15 Salvage Co. Free trolley rides will last from 5:30 until about 8 p.m. Thursday.
Thursday will also mark the start of the 2019 Holiday Stamp Card Promotion where along with Friday, November 29 and Saturday, November 30 (Black Friday/ Small Business Saturday) will be double punch days.
“So, on that day when shoppers visit any of the 30 participating businesses,” Mock added. “When they make a purchase, they’ll receive their first stamp card and they’ll get double stamps for the amount of their purchase on their card on Thursday; Christmas on Main Day.”
Once the card reaches $100 worth of stamps it’ll be placed into the hopper. Prize drawings will be on December 6 and 13 with three drawings each day for $50 with the final drawing on December 20 with two, $200 winners of chamber bucks.
