Chicken Show Events Previewed During Friday Morning Chamber Coffee

WAYNE – The public was invited for the weekly Friday morning Chamber Coffee put on by the Wayne Area Economic Development (WAED) office and hosted by the Chicken Show Committee.

Several events were previewed leading up to Chicken Show weekend from US Cellular.

A new event this year will feature water fights between area fire departments on Saturday at 4 p.m. from the old swimming pool, according to Committee Chair Nancy Johnson (13th & Lincoln).

“Beemer which is brining all their equipment, the set-up; Wayne which is providing the pumper truck,” said Johnson. “Two teams from Wisner and then Titan is brining two tractors to hold the barrel line in place.”Another change in event schedule will be a separate auction for the “little” cement chickens from the “big” chickens. The Cement Chicken Auction will be held Friday at 7 p.m. on the stage at 3rd & Main while another auction will take place for the little ones on Saturday at Bressler Park among the 1 p.m. activities.

Marketing, Events and Tourism Coordinator with WAED, Abby Schademann talked about what she’s most excited about with the Chicken Show.

“But, I’m also very excited we have a few different food vendors,” Schademann mentioned. “A few different activities taking place as well throughout the entire weekend.”

Friday evening activities will last from 5 – 10 p.m. with arts, crafts and more vendors scattered along Main Street. Inflatables will go from 6 – 10 p.m.; a chicken dance will take place at 2nd & Main at 6 p.m. with a hot wing eating contest, music and more being held at the stage on 3rd & Main. Light up the Sky Fireworks will also go off around 10 p.m. from the Summer Sports Complex.

Johnson said they host a wrap-up meeting in August before starting on the next event in September.

“It’s really easy because we’ve been a committee,” Johnson added. “It’s really a core-committee of about eight of us and each one of us has our own jobs. It’s basically, as a Chair, pud for me because everybody is so good at their jobs.”
