WAYNE – Chamber Coffee was held at the Wayne Public Library on Friday morning, hosted by the Wayne Green Team. Attendees were encouraged to bring their own reusable coffee mugs to promote the theme of reducing, reusing, and recycling.
This is the third time that the Wayne Green Team has hosted Chamber Coffee as this year they are celebrating 10 years of service to the community of Wayne. Sandy Brown spoke on behalf of the Green Team and described what has been accomplished within the community by their efforts over the past decade.
“Some of our highlights include, we have recycled over 300,000 pounds of electronics, glass, batteries, and string lights combined and that’s a lot that has been diverted from the landfill,” said Brown. “Second, we have hosted six electronics recycling events, five Earth Day movies, four Green Expos, three household hazardous waste events, two green move-outs at Wayne State College so we’ve been busy.”
Along with their long list of accomplishments the Green Team has also been successful enough to raise $42,000 in grant funds which have been put to good use in the Wayne community. After ten years the Wayne Green Team has really built up a great reputation across the state. Members go to several conferences and speak and have found they are a resource for other rural communities similar to Wayne.
“Other towns have called us about our glass recycling program and how we got it started and what is nice to see is this ripple effect where they have started their own glass recycling program too,” said Brown. “We are also a bit of an inspiration for some of the larger towns who say how can a small town of 5600 be doing what we are doing in Wayne. It’s with a lot of pride that we are able to share our success and hopefully continue to learn from others and teach others too.”
The Wayne Green Team will partner up with the Wayne State College Green Team for a showing of a documentary called “Tapped” at the Majestic Theater on Sunday, April 14th as an early celebration of Earth Day which is on April 22nd. Participants are encouraged to bring their own popcorn containers and cups for snacks and refreshments. The partnership will be raffling off prizes that include a bamboo utensil set and a green teeth cleaning kit and more. The documentary is about a behind the scenes look at the bottled water industry and runs about 75 minutes and will start at 7 p.m.
