Cement Chickens Ready To Be Decorated, Chicken Cook-Off Volunteers Being Sought

WAYNE – In less than two months another year in preparation for the Wayne Chicken Show will take over Wayne America.

This year’s theme is ‘Chickens Around the World’ and is scheduled for Friday, July 12 – Sunday, July 14.

Abby Schademann is the Marketing, Events and Tourism Coordinator with Wayne Area Economic Development. She said the cement chickens are in and the big ones have been auctioned off for over 20 years while the little chicks are in their third year after Nebraska celebrated their Sesquicentennial.

“They decided to something a little bit different and try to do a kid’s cement chick auction,” said Schademann. “That went over well, but we wanted to separated them since it did go on for a really long time. So, we wanted to do something a little bit different.”

For the big chickens, the office just needs some contact information and a signature and for the little chicks a $10 deposit just in case the artist likes it so much they keep it. The little chick auction will take place Saturday afternoon and all ages are welcome to decorate either chicken.

The WAED office encourages those who decorate a big cement chicken or little chick to return them by Monday, July 1. Money raised helps fund the free activities during the Chicken Show.

New this year will be a chicken cook-off event where Schademann added it’s not just one person cooking for 500 people.

“We are looking for cooks to bring in their best chicken dishes to Bressler Park (Saturday) at noon,” Schademann added. “We will have a team of judges judge them and then we will open it up to a free will donation tasting.”

The overall winner will receive a prize and to include their recipe in the chicken cook book during the 40th annual Chicken Show next year. Contact the office to sign-up.

The t-shirts, designed by Stadium Sports are $18 for youth sizes – adult XL and $20 for adult 2X – 3X.
