Callaway Kite Flight 29 Years Strong this Weekend

CALLAWAY—This weekend the sky will be filled with beautiful kites of all shapes and sizes as part of the 29th Annual Callaway Kite Flight. As Zach Meyer with J.R. Meyer Insurance Agency puts it, the weekend is “an amazing spectacle.”

Professional and amateur kite flyers arrive to Callaway from all over the country—and even outside the states—to take part in the weekend of family fun. Located four miles southeast of Callaway on Highway 40 is Foster Smith Field where the fun is scheduled for Saturday, August 31 and Sunday, September 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Event attendees will be able to enjoy viewing kites flown by professionals, but amateurs, hobbyists, and families and kids are also encouraged to fly their own kites or purchase a kite during the event. Guests can bring chairs and picnic blankets to Foster Smith Field as they enjoy the festivities between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.

In addition, Saturday will feature the Night Flight at 11 p.m. at Foster Smith Field (no admission) and on Sunday at 7 p.m. is the free Indoor Flight at the Callaway Community Center. The weekend will also include pony rides, watermelon feeds, candy drops, giveaways, food vendors, and the “big caterpillar” ground kite.

Callaway Kite Flight Chairperson Kindle Rice said there is something for everyone this weekend with fellow committee member Shirley Trout saying the weekend is a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages to experience the joy of flying a kite.

“Just come experience Callaway, the people are amazing. The flight is great too but Callaway in and of itself is the reason to come,” Rice said.

“We’re very blessed to have this going so long,” Trout added.

Hangar 22 will be hosting a catfish fry on Saturday night beginning at 5:30 p.m. while supplies last. The event is sponsored by the American Legion and will benefit the scholarship fund.

Vicki Hendricks with the Good Life Center said Callaway is amazing and it is the pople who step up to make events like this weekend take shape.

Admission on Saturday and Sunday is $5 for adults, $3 for kids, or $25 for the entire family (cash only), ages four and under are free. Upfront parking is reserved for handicap accessibility.

“If you haven’t seen the Kite Flight, you have to see it at least once in your life. And if you haven’t, this is the year to do it,” Zach Meyer said.
