WAYNE – A group of Wayne elementary students who were ‘tellers’ at the Blue Devil Branch took a recent field trip to Lincoln in early May.

According to a release from State Nebraska Bank & Trust, on May 2, 18 tellers toured the State Capitol, joined a counterfeiting session taught by the Nebraska Department of Banking and Finance as well as took part in a presentation of certificates for the tellers’ hard work this year.

Fifth grader Sophia Petersen also received this year’s ‘Stellar Teller’ award, representing the one teller who provided the best customer service, showed up on time to work, promoted the Blue Devil Branch to others and always encouraged students to save.

The State Nebraska Bank & Trust Blue Devil Branch is an in-school savings program for students at Wayne Elementary School. With parental permission, students in kindergarten through sixth grade can open a savings account at school. This year, the branch had great success as students made over 1,700 deposits and saved $6,500 with 46% of the student population having a savings account at school. Students also earned over 500 fun incentives, like bookmarks, coupons and school supplies provided by SNB.

This unique in-school savings program is part of a statewide effort led by the Nebraska Council on Economic Education to teach financial literacy to youth. In three years of operation, nearly 300 students have saved over $19,000 through the State Nebraska Bank & Trust Blue Devil Branch.
