Battle Creek Watershed Improvement Project Work Plan Being Developed

MADISON COUNTY – There were more than 80 people in attendance for the Battle Creek Watershed Improvement Project Work Plan meeting. The meeting was hosted by the Lower Elkhorn Natural Resources District (LENRD) and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). JEO Consulting Group facilitated the meeting and they’re the organization developing the plan.

The open house meeting was apart of the Environmental Assessment (Plan-EA) to address consistent flooding issues in Battle Creek. Background information on the Battle Creek Watershed was discussed in the meeting. The aforementioned groups suggested some possible alternatives to the current watershed. There is a recording of the meeting on the LENRD’s website at www.lenrd.org. JEO’s Adam Rupe will be accepting comments for Plan-EA through Thursday, July 23, 2020 at arupe@jeo.com, or by calling him at 402-435-3080. Comments can also be sent to the JEO Lincoln office at 2700 Fletcher Avenue, Lincoln, NE, 68504.

Flood prevention is the goal of the Battle Creek Watershed Improvement Project. The project will also look for potential recreational benefits. The plan is still being developed, while all purposes and alternatives are being deliberated.

Plan E-A must follow the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The act pertains to financial assistance received through the NRCS’s Watershed and Flood Prevention Operations (WFPO) Program. The Plan is scheduled to be finalized in 2021.
