WAYNE – The Wayne Community Activity Center partially reopened on Monday, May 18th. Just like every other place that’s reopening, there’s many restrictions in order to slow the spread of COVID-19.
Amber Schwarte is the Recreation Services Coordinator for the activity center. At a time when it’s been difficult to stay in shape physically and mentally, Schwarte encourages members to exercise.
“I know exercise does wonders for your mental health just in general,” she stated. “You can talk to the staff, you can talk to people, as long as you’re staying far enough away, and you’re just using proper social distancing and cleaning measures.”
There’s twelve members allowed in the activity center at a time along with one staff member to clean. Schwarte explains the time block system they’ve put in place.
“Blocks will go from like 6:00 to 6:45 a.m., 7:00 to 7:45, and so on, which allows for the 15 minutes in between sessions to clean,” she stated. “Our staff is going to clean up a little bit, and then spray down the equipment.”
Unfortunately, only members will be allowed to reserve a time slot. Also, they’re not accepting any new memberships nor can someone buy a day pass.
They request that before and after using a machine, people wipe it down with the disinfecting wipes provided by the activity center. Make sure to bring a water bottle because the fountain is closed, while the bottle refill station remains open. Schwarte assured members of safety using equipment and mentions the locker room and bathroom situation.
“If anyone needs their equipment sprayed down beforehand, they can request that,” Schwarte said. “Locker rooms are closed off, the bathrooms upfront are open, but we’re limiting it to two people at a time, and we have every other stall blocked off.”
Staff will be wearing masks at all times, and they put on gloves while disinfecting equipment.
They ask that there be at least one bike or treadmill open between members, to keep the appropriate distance apart.
All of the normal equipment in the fitness room is open and ready to be used. Every other part of the facility is closed for the time being. They hope to gradually open up the rest of the activity center in the next few weeks.
The Wayne Community Activity Center is open on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.; 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and 4 p.m. till 9 p.m. The two-hour breaks are built-in for the staff to do a deep clean of the facility. The activity center is also open for time reservation on the weekends.
