A New Place to Call Home

NORFOLK – Thanks to the partnership between several organizations, one Norfolk family can call a newly built house on 10th St., their home.

After receiving a grant from the Northeast Nebraska Economic Development District; Habitat for Humanity and the United States Department of Agriculture partnered to build two new homes in Norfolk.

In a celebration event Tuesday afternoon, Donna Rector, the Norfolk Area Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity shared her feelings about the work of the organization.

“When I use to read about it in the paper, I was so taken by the fact that it [Habitat For Humanity] was a hand up not a handout because volunteers and donors were building homes that would be lived in by families who would be purchasing the home.”

Some of the volunteers that made this possible included students from Northeast Community College. Roughly 35 students worked close to 300 hours on the project.

Rebecca Tangeman is the mother of three and the new owner of the home. She is happy with the finished project and the fact that she contributed to the process from start to end.

“I got to help pick out the siding, the shingles, the colors and everything. Throughout the entire process, it felt like mine, so the only thing left is to personalize it with my possessions because I already feel like it’s mine.”

This home makes the 29th home built in the Norfolk area by Habitat For Humanity, but it won’t be the last.
