Phyllis Hix, age 89, passed away on Monday, November 6, 2017, at the Providence Medical Center in Wayne, Nebraska, surrounded by family. From her birth in Le Sueur, Minnesota, on November 2, 1928, to her death on Monday, she brought great joy and laughter to her friends and family. At the age of 10, Phyllis started playing the piano and within a few years, she was playing the organ in her local church every Sunday morning. She continued playing the piano for 79 years. During high school, she also was a member of a local band with her friends called the “Knights of Notes” playing at weddings and dances. After graduating from high school, she attended Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, and continued with her love of music by becoming a music teacher. In 1965, she began teaching at Wakefield Public Schools where she later became the school librarian. In 1993, Phyllis retired and was fulfilling her days with spending time with family, knitting sweaters for the grandkids, playing bridge with friends at the Senior Center, baking her famous chocolate chip cookies, spoiling her dogs, and attending the grandkids’ sporting events. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Wayne Senior Center.  Family was the most important thing to Phyllis and she was very proud of her four children: Larry (Karol) Hix of Chadron, Steve (Linda) Hix of Lincoln, Gloria (Joe) Vavricka of Hildreth and Dave (Karla) Hix of Wayne; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Betty Seiler. Phyllis will be remembered as a kind-hearted, loving, and caring mother, grandmother and friend to all of those who were fortunate enough to have her in their lives.
