Funeral Services for Dr. Wayne Wessel, DDS, age 80, of Wayne will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wayne on Friday at 10:30 a.m. Visitation will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wayne on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. -8:00 p.m. with family present. Interment with Military Rites will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Wayne.  He passed away Sunday in Lincoln.  Memorials may be directed to the Wessel Family for later designation.  Arrangements are with Hasemann Funeral Home in Wayne. Dr. Wayne E. Wessel died peacefully surrounded by his family in Lincoln, Ne. on June 25, 2017 at the age of 80 after a courageous battle against Parkinson’s disease.

Wayne was born September 26, 1936 in Nehawka, NE to George & Edith (Seacat) Wessel. He graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Dentistry with a D.D.S. degree in 1961. Wayne married Annamae Emshoff on June 2, 1958.

He served in the Army Dental Corps in Vietnam. In 1963, Wayne and Annamae moved to Wayne, NE where he joined Dr. Gordon Shupe in dental practice. It was through his dental career that Wayne made a significant impact to the improvement of dental health through education and by providing amazing care and practicing preventative dentistry. He was a member of countless dental health committees, was Chairman of the successful water fluoridation campaign in Wayne, NE, leading to improved dental health in the community, served as President of the Nebraska Dental Association and was inducted into both the Nebraska Dental Association Hall of Fame and the International Hall of Fame of Dentists. Wayne retired from dentistry in 2005 after 40+ years of private practice. His 1961 UNL dental class remained lifelong friends for now 55+ years. Wayne so valued the lasting & meaningful relationships he developed with his patients throughout Northeast Nebraska.

Wayne embraced his love for his hometown by serving on several local board of directors. In 1974, he served as the President of the Wayne Chamber of Commerce. Wayne was awarded the Citizen of the Year by the Wayne Chamber of Commerce in 1990. He was an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church.
Wayne was a true outdoorsman and loved fishing and hunting with his son, grandchildren and friends. He played on the rec basketball league, rode on two Bike Rides Across Nebraska (BRAN), enjoyed playing golf and watching the Huskers. He was passionate about fitness which contributed to his strength and ability to battle and persevere against Parkinson’s. 

The most blessed of those that knew Wayne, were his four children. They received never ending love, support, encouragement and the best childhood anyone could ask for. His kids remember him as a loving, caring, interested, gentle, patient, logical and funny dad who encouraged them every step of the way.

Wayne is survived by his children; Scott (Cassidy) Wessel of Bloomfield NE., Brenda Duffack (Domenic Ruffa) of Boca Raton FL., Jennifer (Jon) Stoltenberg of Lincoln, NE. & Julie (Mike) Richards of Phoenix, AZ.; eight grandchildren; Autumn Wessel & Jase Gerdes, Luke Duffack, Max, Maggie & George Stoltenberg, Ella & Hank Richards; nieces, nephews, dental classmates and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Annamae in 2009; sisters: Ruth Stubbendick, Doris Kepler and brother; George Wessel.
