Memorial services for Dorothy Skovbo, 86, of Laurel, will be held at United Lutheran Church in Laurel on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Memorial visitation will be held at United Lutheran Church in Laurel on Saturday from 11:30 a.m. until service time. Internment will be at Laurel Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation. She passed away on Wednesday at her home. Arrangements are with Hasemann Funeral Home of Laurel.
Dorothy Irene Skovbo was born October 30, 1930, at Nashua, IA to Thomas and Clara (Mohring) Maitland. She was baptized at Nashua. She graduated as Valedictorian of her class at Plover High School in Plover, IA and St. Joseph School of Nursing in Sioux City, IA. Dorothy married Verlyn Wentworth March 18, 1948, in the Little Brown Church In The Vale at Nashua, IA. On May 28, 1982, Dorothy married Paul Skovbo at Laurel.
Through the years she was a telephone operator in Storm Lake, IA and in Laurel she managed the Den Café and was a store clerk. Dorothy became a registered nurse at the age of 48. She was employed at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, IA, Punta Gorda, FL, S.D.A. Hospital, and San Marcos Medical Center in San Marcos, TX, retiring in 1994. She then divided her time between Laurel, NE and Weslaco, TX. Dorothy was a Den Mother and Girl Scout Leader. She enjoyed golfing, bowling, crossword puzzles, and a mean game of Scrabble.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Susan (Gene) Roach of South Sioux City, James (Mary) Wentworth of Marietta, GA, Carolyn (Brad) Harder of Laurel; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers Roger (Jane) Maitland of Crossville, TN, John (Linda) Maitland of Cedar Falls, IA, and Thomas Maitland of Joliet, IL; sister, Adah V. Hadenfeldt of Storm Lake, IA; nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul Skovbo in 2002; two brothers, Jim Maitland and Darwin Maitland.
