WAYNE – After being outscored in the first half the Wayne High Blue Devils outscored O’Neill in the second half; still to come up short.

The Wayne High Blue Devils and O’Neill Eagles met Friday night to kick off the season. O’Neill defeated Wayne 28-21 at Bob Cunningham Field on the campus of Wayne State College. O’Neill improved to 1-0 while Wayne fell to 0-1 on the season.

Wayne began the game with an opening drive that stalled at the 25-yard line of O’Neill during a turnover-on-downs.

Wayne’s defense was then put to the test early. They showed their strength and forced a three and out from the O’Neill offense. After a snap that sailed over the O’Neill punters’ head Wayne took over inside the 10-yard line of O’Neill.

A few plays after Wayne scored on a one-yard quarterback keeper from #2 Beau Bowers. #18 Jordan Cliff completed with the extra point to give Wayne their only lead of the game at 7-0.

Head Wayne football coach Terry Beair told 98.9 The City in the Blue Devil football post-game show that Beau Bowers understands the game and when he steps on the field he commands the attention of all 10 other guys.

“And it’s a quiet confidence he’s not a raw-raw guy,” said Coach Beair. “But he gets in there and every one of those guys, I don’t care if it’s a senior or a freshman, they are glued to what he is about to say.”

O’Neil then scored on back to back drives to end the first quarter. Their first, from a one-yard quarterback keeper from #15 Tyson Hostert. While #60 Bailey Thompson scored on a 22-yard run in the first quarter and two-yard run in the second quarter to make the score at half 21-7 in favor of the O’Neill Eagles.

The only scoring action in the third quarter took place when Hostert hooked up with #10 Justin Appleby for a 96-yard touchdown pass for the O’Neill Eagles; making the score 28-7 O’Neill.

In the fourth quarter Wayne mounted a come-back scoring on back-to-back possessions. #38 Drew Davie for a five-yard touchdown run and on a 10-yard passing touchdown from Bowers to #7 Ryan Jaixen; making the score 28-21 O’Neill.

Wayne’s final drive came up just short on a 4th and 10 play in O’Neill territory Bowers pass was just off target to Jaixen that would have kept the drive alive.

Head Coach Terry Beair for Wayne said that the team has been through adversity as the coaching staff saw it through the summer camps.

“This is the little quality I try to explain to people what these guys’ have,” said Coach Beair. “Some people call it the “it factor”, they don’t stop and so they really responded to some of the adversity that we had.”

Next up for the Wayne Blue Devils will be another home contest on Friday, September 4 at Bob Cunningham Field on the campus of Wayne State College. Wayne will host Fort Calhoun at 7 p.m. Follow the game on 98.9 The City and online at waynedailynews.com with pregame set for 6:45 p.m.
