WAYNE – A division II football team returns one of the top quarterbacks in the NSIC while returning their entire offensive line and running back core from last season.
The Wayne State College football team will bring back eight starters from last years’ team that went 5-6 overall in conference play.
Although the teams’ record didn’t show it WSC was in the top half of scoring offense (8th –31.4 points per game), total offense (3rd – 469.9 total yards per game), rushing (8th – 169.5 yards per game), and passing (2nd – 300.4 yards per game) categories in the NSIC.
The Wildcat offense will return their starting QB in redshirt-junior Zach Osborn who led the conference in total offense with 324.4 yards per game and second in the NSIC with 299.2 passing yards per game.
One of the key strengths that the WSC football team will be returning is the running back position. Head football coach for WSC, Dan McLaughlin, said Ryan Ludlow, Alex Kline, Rashad Trimble, and Lane Yates all saw time in the running back position and were injured throughout last season.
“Because of that no really seized the position and took over and made it his,” said Coach McLaughlin. “But all four of them played well when they played.”
Another position that Coach McLaughlin feels really good about is the Offensive Line for Wayne State College. All five starters will be returning from last season and got bigger and better over the off-season. Coach McLaughlin said that the O-Line is the strongest position in experience and depth.
“All of our offensive line is back,” said Coach McLaughlin. “We led the league last year in fewest sacks allowed and as I said were second in the league in total offense.”
Key positions the team has addressed during fall camp and will be looking forward to see who steps up are the full back, wide receiver, and tight end positions.
The Wildcat football team will get their first test of the season during their home opener on Friday, September 5. WSC will host the University Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles at 1 p.m. at Bob Cunningham Field on the campus of Wayne State College.
