WAYNE – A new coach has stepped in and will look to lead the Wildcat women’s soccer team to a great season this year.
On July 20 Bruce Erickson was named the eighth coach in the program’s 19-year history and third coach that the seniors will be coached by.
When Coach Erickson came to campus for his interview many of the seniors attended the interview.
Coach Erickson said the thing that struck him the most on his visit was the attitude in the line of questions from the seniors. They were not a group that had a bad attitude.
“That showed disappointment in having to go through the process,” said Coach Erickson. “They were generally excited for the prospect of playing for somebody.”
The Wildcat women’s soccer team has high standards and high expectations for this upcoming season. Coach Erickson mentioned the team also has to be honest with themselves and figure out who they are. Every week the team wants to get better in the toughest league in the country.
“And you’re playing all but three of your conference games back-to-back,” mentioned Coach Erickson. “Which that’s tough to do in the game of soccer.”
Wayne State will open their 2015 season at the WSC Soccer Complex with three non-conference games and the NSIC opener to begin the month of September. WSC finished 3-14-1 overall and 2-13 in the NSIC last season and will look to make improvements each time out.
