WAYNE – Fall sports at Wayne State College compete in the gym, soccer field, and football field. Another sport competes on the course, and that is the Women’s and Men’s Cross Country team.
The Wayne State College Women’s and Men’s Cross Country team will be set for another season.
Head Cross Country coach, Marlon Brink, said the summer is always a challenging time of the year since the athletes are on their own.
“They’ve been logging a lot of miles over the summer building up their base mileage,” said Brink. “So far with the workouts we’ve done it seems like they’ve come back in pretty good shape.”
Top returners for the Women’s team are junior Andrea DeSimone and senior Molly Kingsley. Coach Brink said the team is a little thin on overall numbers.
“We’re working on trying to make sure we have a solid squad of five good runners,” Brink mentioned. “And hopefully be able to contend with them.”
For the Men, two seniors, Justin Brueggemann and Nick Fly will lead the team. They were also the top two runners at the conference and regional meet.
“I would expect that they would be our leaders again,” said Brink. “Also with them being seniors they provide some good leadership for the younger guys on the team.”
The Women’s and Men’s Cross Country teams will open their 2015 season on Friday, September 4. Wayne State will compete in the Augustana Twilight Invitational at the Yankton Trails Park in Sioux Falls, S.D. The women will run 8:30 p.m. followed by the men at 9 p.m. under the lights.
