Cory Mildenstein 49, of Sioux City, Iowa. drowned in the Atlantic Ocean near Aquadilla, Puerto Rico on Wednesday, April 4.
He was on a Temporary Duty assignment for the 185th Air National Guard of Sioux City.
Cory was the fourth child born to Beverly (Afinson) and Marlen Mildenstein in Cherokee, Iowa. The family moved to Morningside in Sioux City and Cory attended Whittier and East High School graduating in 1981. Cory loved working on cars and riding his motorcycle through Morningside.
Cory married Kathy Nice in 1985 and raised her daughter Amber born in 1984 as his own. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in October 1985. Following graduation from Basic Training, he attended the Electronic Warfare Systems Specialist Course and was then assigned to George Air Force Base, Calif. Cory and Kathy had a daughter April in 1986 and a
son Zac in 1990. The family moved back to Sioux City. Cory worked at Gateway 2000, Quality Auto Finish and started working at Sioux Tools in 1993 and worked there till the company closed. Cory worked as a handyman in Sioux City.
He joined the Iowa Air National Guard in October 2005 and was named honor graduate of his Structural Maintenance course. Mildenstein previously deployed to Bagram, Afghanistan as part of the Iowa Air National Guard Civil Engineering team in 2011. Cory was proud to serve his country like his father before him.
Cory always had a smile on his face and space in his heart for everyone. He was very proud of his children Amber, April and Zac. He
loved spending time with family and friends and he was always willing to help with a home repair, or car project. He was also an avid
Vikings football fan. Cory's son Zac is a freshman at Wayne State College. Cory planned to marry and live with Maureen Carrigg in
Wayne.
Mildenstein is survived by his father and mother, Marlen and Beverly Mildenstein, of Sioux City; daughters, Amber (Justin) Nice-Pier of
Abilene Texas; April Olson of Sioux City; son, Zachary Mildenstein of Wayne, Neb.; brother, Ricky (Cecelia) of LeMars, Iowa; sisters Sheryl Mildenstein of LeMars; Marcia (William) McDeavitt of Florida; grandchildren Kaylee, J.D, and Ethan; his fiancée, Maureen Carrigg, of Wayne Neb.; and several close cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles. He was preceded in death by his brother, Barry, both maternal and paternal grandparents, and his dog, Alex. Visitation will be at Grace United Methodist Church in Sioux City 4-8PM on Sunday April 15th. Family present from 6-8PM. Prayer Service at 7PM. Services will be at Grace United Methodist in Sioux City on Monday April 16th at 11AM Iowa. The family invites to a luncheon at the church after the service. Burial will be at Cushing Cemetery, Cushing, Arrangements by Christy Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City.
