Nebraska baseball dug a first-inning hole and just kept digging in a 17-5 loss to Michigan State on Saturday.
The Huskers (14-15, 2-5 Big Ten) committed two errors in both the Spartans’ five-run first inning and nine-run seventh. The 17 runs mark the most NU has allowed since a February, 26, 2016, loss to San Diego.
Starting pitcher Luis Alvarado gave up five hits, two hit batters and a walk in four innings, striking out five. He gave up five runs — none earned.
NU trimmed the deficit to 5-4 after a Ben Klenke two-RBI single in the fifth, but it was all MSU from there.
NU’s second game against Michigan State (8-19, 2-5) for Saturday was canceled. First pitch Sunday will be at 10 a.m.
