LINCOLN — Sophomore guard Nana Akenten is transferring from the Nebraska basketball program, he announced Wednesday afternoon. That leaves the Huskers with five open scholarships.

Akenten appeared in 28 games this season, averaging 4.3 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. He shot 36.4% from the field and 30.4% from behind the arc.

Akenten was suspended indefinitely by former coach Tim Miles after the Michigan State game on March 5 for a violation of team rules. He did not see the floor again for the final six games.

Nebraska coaches said Monday that Akenten was still with the program but dealing with academic issues.

He’s the second player to transfer from Nebraska since Fred Hoiberg was hired, following Thomas Allen, who left for North Carolina State. Their departures leave holes in NU’s roster.

Should Isaiah Roby decide to remain in the NBA draft, Nebraska will have six open scholarships.

The only scholarship players on Hoiberg’s roster right now are junior transfer Dachon Burke, redshirt freshman Karrington Davis, sophomore Amir Harris, junior Thorir Thorbjarnarson and sophomore Brady Heiman. Walk-on Justin Costello is still with the program. Davis and Harris are currently rehabbing injuries.

Signees Jervay Green and Akol Arop will join the program this summer. Mika Adams-Woods, another member of the 2019 signing class, asked for his release and is considering other options.

Nebraska plans to add talent through the transfer market.

Florida Gulf Coast graduate transfer Haanif Cheatham will visit Lincoln this weekend. He’s immediately eligible and averaged 14.2 points and 4.8 rebounds last season.

Cam Mack, from Salt Lake Community College, would also be eligible next year and is interested in Nebraska. The 6-foot-2 guard averaged 19.1 points per game this season as a redshirt freshman. Nebraska has been trying to set up a date for him to visit. He was originally a St. John’s signee and was recruited by current NU assistant Matt Abdelmassih.
