Husker fans defrauded in football ticket scheme

A Lincoln woman has been arrested on suspicion of fraud and identity theft involving hundreds of Nebraska football tickets and thousands of dollars.

Lincoln police said Thursday that the 31-year-old purchased 336 Nebraska football tickets worth nearly $24,570 between September and November. The woman is also accused of defrauding an Alliance woman of $24,376.

Officers began an investigation after a Kearney woman reported paying $200 for five tickets to the Nov. 10 game against Illinois. The buyer said she was denied entrance to the game because the original owner had disputed credit card charges for the tickets.

Police learned that the Husker football tickets were fraudulently purchased with at least 10 different Cabela’s Capital One credit cards. All of the card holders disputed the fraudulent charges.

Officers uncovered the scam with the aid of Cabela’s Capitol One investigators, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln director of ticketing and the Husker Ticket Exchange, police said. Investigators said a female employee of Cabela’s Capital One credit card department obtained the card holders’ information.

The woman also is accused of opening a bank card in the name of an Alliance woman and charging more than $18,000 between July and September, police said. A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of fraud and identity theft in connection with that case.
