New NU quarterbacks coach: “Selling out the spring game? C’mon man”

NEBRASKA CITY – Nebraska football fans from as far as Kansas City filled the Table Creek Golf Course Club House in Nebraska City Thursday evening to listen to a pair of new coaches talk about the 2018 recruiting class signed on Wednesday.

Head Coach Scott Frost’s first recruiting class features 24 signees — NU’s largest class since 2013 – and 18 walk-on commitments. Frost and his assistants — imported entirely from Central Florida, Frost’s last coaching stop — turned in a top 25 class in two months.

Quarterbacks Coach Mario Verduzco and Senior Offensive Analyst Frank Verducci made their first ever trip to Nebraska City to spend time discussing the newest members of the Husker football program. Fans draped in Husker gear, from hats to sweaters, had the opportunity to ask questions and view video highlights of each of signee.

The buzz around the recruiting class and Frost’s first season led to a sellout of the spring game — the first in school history. The game sold out in a little more than 24 hours.

Verduzco joked he is going to use the scrimmage at Memorial Stadium as a practice to get used to the 90,000+ fans who will be cheering on the Big Red in the fall.

“So I wouldn’t be such a newbie when I’m walking into a stadium of 90,000 people. It’ll be quite exciting. Fired up for the spring game. Fired up to get going.”

The spring game is scheduled for April 21. Their are currently six quarterbacks listed on the the Nebraska roster.

Verducci says the NU fan base is the identity of the football program.

“I’ve worked at a lot of different universities and large universities, and this just doesn’t happen. There’s not the widespread support that we have here in the state of Nebraska for Cornhusker football. As coaches we know anything we can do to spread that and to grow it is awesome.”

The Huskers kick-off the season on Sept. 1 at home vs. Akron. News Channel Nebraska will once again carry football games on KBIE in Nebraska City at 103.1 FM.
