DUBUQUE, Iowa – eSports is a growing phenomenon on college campuses throughout the United States and is one of the fastest growing varsity programs. eSports is organized competitive, multi-player video gaming.
Heart of America Athletic Conference member Clarke University announced Monday the addition of eSports to its list of now 21 varsity sports. Clarke joins St. Ambrose University, Grand View University, Morningside College and Hawkeye Community College as the only Iowa schools with competitive eSports programs. Over 50 schools nationwide are a part of the National Association of Collegiate eSports.
According to officials at Peru State College, also a member of the Heart of America Athletic Conference, the school is looking at enrollment strategies and eSports is on the list for conversation.
“Several schools in our conference are adding eSports,” Peru State President Dr. Daniel Hanson told News Channel Nebraska. “The College continues to explore a number of activities and programs to enhance the student experience.”
Recruiting for the spring 2019 season is already underway at Clarke University. They will compete in the League of Legends North American League North Division.
“Clarke will attract and recruit a new type of student-athlete,” says Head Coach Joshua Moris. “With the inclusion of eSports, we are bridging the realms of technology and sports by making competitions accessible both physically and online. In addition, eSports bring a new way for the Clarke community to become involved – virtually – to root for their team.”
